This reminds me of a comment my then husband made to me when I had just moved in with him in Los Angeles in 1986.

"I want to write, but I feel stuck without my typewriter, dictionary, white out, carbon paper, etc." I said.

"In the old days, all that was needed was a paper and pencil," he retorted.

Yes, but what kind of paper and pencil? You've got to try a few thousand permutations before you arrive at the Blackwing 602 and Tomoe River, right? :)
