Good for you! I wrote my dissertation on erotic fiction, which seemed an odd choice to many, but it led me to where I am now, and I'm happy, so *shrugs*.
Learning your story is the perfect way to start my day! I had a very similar experience with creating a niche about a topic I’m obsessed with: Sober Sex. I even spent years interviewing sober adult entertainers, sharing their stories to destigmatize both sex work and addiction recovery while showing that sober sex can bring liberation in countless ways.
The rejection I faced by studying/pitching my niche makes me nearly impervious to rejection now. Rejection is part of the writing process. I’ll definitely share your 33 Asks course with my writing students and clients.
I salute you and your hustle, Lauren! Keep dancing ✨
Lauren, thank you for writing this interesting article and being an example of someone pursuing her dream as well as succeeding at it!
Could I trouble you to explain something to me? There's a phrase you wrote that I'm unsure what it means, but I would like to. The phrase is "The way obscenity laws adversely affect marginalized groups for the activists". I would understand it if it said "The way obscenity laws affect activists for the marginalized groups", and perhaps that's what you meant, but if not, I'll learn something from your explanation. Thanks.
Cool story and love that you embraced the joy of dancing around or away from naysayers. I'm in San Diego too! Thanks for sharing and have a great day. :)
