This resonates deeply with me. I'm not a DJ, but I'm a collector. I can't let them go, even if, thanks to CDs, I'll never play any of my 78s and LPs again. I've moved house twelve times, and each time, there have been more records to move than the previous times. But those records are a huge part of my life. I feel your pain, and I feel your love.

I can't help but think of all the memories attached to the collections in our house as I read this, and it makes me wonder why we start to collect what we do. What drew us to these items first? I love that for you, it's records that are recording your life.

I greatly enjoyed this because I went through the same process when I moved in April from a house to a condo. I often slipped reviews and articles about the performers into albums, so I could trace what I was reading through the music. The articles created a decades-long conversation about artists and albums. I also typically wrote the date I bought the album on the sleeve, so I could track my changing tastes, from rock to jazz to Latin. When the crunch came, I sold or gave away about 75 percent of the records, hanging on to the first three ZZ Top albums (the beat of my teen years), along with Woodstock, massive boxed sets by Miles Davis and Benny Goodman, Chicago at Carnegie Hall, Last Days of the Fillmore and bossa nova. Every time a well-known musician dies, like Brian Wilson or Bob Weir, I want to spin their vinyl, but most of it is gone. I still have loads of CDs but the albums pack the emotional punch. I can only hope the ones I no longer have found a forever home.

When the body dies, do we cease hearing music?

After 10 moves or so, we finally parted with our dear beloved vinyl collection that including every genre from cool jazz to hard rock, country rock, Willie Colon, Puccini to show tunes. Now, my twenty something son wants vinyls.

My mother's LP collection was as great as yours if not more so. It went cross country at least 4 times. I once found a photograph of my biological father inside a Sinatra album. Near the end she was able to get lots of $ from a collector as she had a tremendous jazz stash.

My brother now has every album I ever owned (it's genetic!) cuz I didn't want to move them again.

I feel this. It’s the same for me, except movies. I even wrote a whole book about it!
